Fix Your Content Performance

content audit for when views are down

Hey.

Your latest video has been live for 48 hours and barely cracked 3k views.

Last month, the same content cracked 10k+.

You know something is wrong, but trying to diagnose the problem is tough.

It’s easy to blame the algorithm, but it might be your content.

Here’s how to fix it ⤵️

In today’s newsletter:

Audit Your Content and Fix Your Views

When your content isn’t performing, you can do one of two things:

  1. Blame the algorithm. Keep creating the same content. Be upset at the performance.

  2. Be upset. Learn the new algorithm. Change your content.

Successful creators treat their work like a science—they audit, analyze, and adjust based on the data. They still feel the emotions when algorithms change.

It sucks. But they adapt.

1️⃣ Step 1: Gather the Data

You need to see the full picture before you can fix anything. Don’t just look at your latest few posts—discovering meaningful patterns takes sufficient data.

90-Day Deep Dive

Pull analytics for the last 90 days across all platforms:

  • Views/impressions

  • Average view duration

  • Engagement

  • Hook

  • Video topic

  • CTR (if relevant)

If you’re posting multiple videos per day, a 30-day review should be enough. Don’t dig this up for 1,000 pieces of content. 😅

Tip: If collecting this data is still too time-consuming for you, hire an assistant to complete it. It shouldn’t take more than 10 hours to complete and is a goldmine of information.

2️⃣ Step 2: Identify Performance Outliers

Sort the data in a few different ways:

  • By total views

  • By engagement

What are your top performers?

Are there patterns in:

  • Topic

  • Length

  • Hook

  • Format

  • Thumbnail style (for YouTube)

Now look at your lowest performers. What patterns do you see between those videos?

Then extract meaning from the data.

Here are a few examples:

Data Says

Your Learnings

All the lowest-performing videos had poor viewer retention.

My hooks aren’t strong enough. I will try new hooks to increase viewer retention.

Several of the top-performing videos were tutorials.

I will create more tutorial videos.

The videos with the highest viewer retention in the first 5 seconds start with a relatable hook.

I will use more relatable hooks.

Videos over 2 minutes performed well on Instagram, but not on TikTok.

I will create shorter versions of the longer videos for Instagram.

3️⃣ Step 3: Learn the New Algorithm Changes

There isn’t always an algorithm change behind poor-performing content. But sometimes there is. And it’s important to figure that out before you go recreating your top performers from Step 2.

For example—Instagram’s new algorithm has been prioritizing carousels over Reels and tons of creators are seeing a drop in Reels views.

In this case, take the learnings from Step 2 and adapt them to content pieces designed to thrive in the new algorithm.

For example:

  • 5 Things I Wish I Knew in My 20s (1:30 Reel) → 6-slide carousel

  • 4-Slide IG Story promoting your template → 1-slide story with link

  • Short video with a long caption → Short video, concise caption, send to newsletter for more information

4️⃣ Step 4: Make Changes then Check In

Take what you’ve learned from reviewing the data and algorithm changes and make changes to your content. Experiment for the next 30 days, then review and iterate again.
