How Jomboy Media Went from $200k to $10M in Revenue This Year

This week in Creator Studio, we interviewed Courtney Hirsch, COO of Jomboy Media on the company’s insane growth this year.

Jomboy Media first blew up in 2019 when Jimmy “Jomboy” O’Brien used his lip-reading skills to uncover a baseball scandal.

Now, the company has grown to 44 podcasts and 21 YouTube channels all covering sports. To support this operation, they’ve hired 50+ employees and raised $6m in funding.

When we sat down with Courtney, we asked “How exactly did Jomboy Media scale from a viral YouTube video into a highly profitable creator business?”

Here’s what she said:

  1. Build Community. Your community needs to be tapped in for your creator business to grow. (Reply to this email if you’d like an issue on tactical ways to crate community.)

  2. Build Brands. Don’t think of your content as a singular channel/podcast/account. Think of it as a multi-platform brand with merch, licensing, advertisers, etc.

  3. Overdeliver. Long-term partnerships are the key to 8-figure revenue. How do you get there?

By going above and beyond with sponsors. Make it insanely easy to work with you, and brands will be dying to work with you again.

A few examples: offer incentives, make comprehensive rate packages, send analytics reports before they ask for it.

President-Elect Trump’s Plan for the TikTok Ban

On the campaign trail, Donald Trump made his position clear—he wants to “save” TikTok. But will anything actually happen?

Here’s what we know.

A law passed in April (with bipartisan support) gives China-owned TikTok until January 19th, 2025 to divest. If they don’t, the app would become banned in the US.

This is the day before Trump’s inauguration, but given that TikTok has challenged the ban as unconstitutional, it could delay the litigation until Trump comes into office.

If the deadline is pushed into Trump’s presidency, he could push Congress to repeal the law or discourage his Attorney General from enforcing it.

This would mark a significant shift in his policy. In his first term, he oversaw a federal investigation against ByteDance that aimed to result in a sale of the platform.

It’s unclear how it will all unfold. Regardless, for creators, now is the time to diversify to other platforms.

YouTube Launches Gifting for Vertical Livestreams

Viewers can now purchase “Jewels” (similar to TikTok’s coins) to send to livestream creators. Once sent to creators, they become “Rubies” which are worth 1 cent each.

Apparently the price of Jewels can vary, so there isn’t a clear revenue share.

YouTube is offfering a 50% bonus of creators’ gift earnings (up to $1,000) for the next 3 months as an incentive to get on live and allow viewers to use this new feature.
