The Playbook for Success on Socials
the best advice from our expert guests this year
Hey.
This year, we launched Creator Studio—a free Discord community dedicated to helping creators connect, monetize, and grow.
Each week, we bring in a new guest for an open conversation and live Q&A. We’ve chatted with:
top YouTube thumbnail designers
creators like Jenny Hoyos and Humphrey Yang
and channel managers to teach us about the BTS
In today’s newsletter, we’re recapping some of the most impactful, tactical advice given by our guests throughout the year.
Jenny Hoyos on Growth Strategies for 6M Subs
Jenny grew her channel to to 6.4 million subscribers at just 19-years-old. Here’s her entire process:
An ideator on her team sends a list of ideas. She picks a couple. They hop on a call to brainstorm on the idea more before it enters pre-production.
They go through around 100 ideas per week. 2 usually make the cut.
She bases the selections on data (what’s worked on other channels? any proven success?) and feeling (is it relatable on a human level?).
She prioritizes the hook. If she can’t find a good hook, she changes the video idea.
Her videos follow the same structure: hook that provides shock > set up the expectations (say what the video is going to be about) > give a reason to watch until the end.
Meghan Lim on Template Sales
Meghan generated over $48,000 in sales from her digital budget template in just a few months. Here are some of her top tips:
Use a gender-neutral colorway so the product appeals to a larger audience.
Time your launch around when people are feeling motivated (ie. Meghan launched on Black Friday because it’s end-of-year, when people are motivated to fix their finances).
Use ManyChat (a DM automation software) to get the product link to viewers ASAP after viewing your video.
David Altizer on Thumbnails With Millions of Clicks
David has designed YouTube thumbnails for creators like Kurtis Conner (5M subscribers), Max Fosh (4M subscribers), and Jolly (4M subscribers). His designs have generated over 100 million clicks. 🤯
Here were some of his tips:
The current thumbnail best-practice is focused on simplicity and realism, not overly-curated or edited images.
Don’t fill the thumbnail with too many elements.
Use color and perspective to create intrigue.
Mallory Baska on $30k Course Launches
Mal made $3k in sales on her first launch with just $3k followers. Now she earns upwards of $30k per course launch. Here’s her strategy:
Make sure the course offers something competing products don’t. How can you make the most valuable product possible?
Run a free online webinar (live or pre-recorded). Deliver actual value, then pitch your program at the end of the session.
Consider engaging webinar attendees in an email sequence that markets the course to them if they don’t purchase right after the webinar.
Amanda Marcovitch on Pitching for Brand Deals
Amanda is the COO of Youshaei Studios, a creator with over 650k followers across platforms. She handles all things partnerships, business management, and invoicing.
Since taking on the role, she’s made sure every single YouTube video had a sponsor—with 35% of the deals coming from outbound pitching.
Here are some of her tips:
She sends around 100 email pitches per week.
Look at competing channels—who are they partnering with? (or vice versa, what types of channels are your dream brand partners working with?)
Find the influencer marketing manager there on LinkedIn.
Write a custom pitch.
Be flexible on pricing. Find a way to make their budget work with a deliverable you can offer, without going too low.
Mario Joos on Cracking the Code to High Retention
Mario is an expert in growing YouTube channels and serves as the Retention Director for some of the most well-known creators. His big piece of advice? Take an analytical approach.
Capitalize on emerging trends and formats before they become oversaturated.
Use platforms like Google Trends to monitor this.
Think about human psychology. Concepts like novelty, uncertainty, and knowledge gaps will pique interest and curiosity.
