What Makes a Good Video? [Tips from MrBeast’s Video Editor]

Last week in Creator Studio, we talked with Rachel Kisela, former Lead Video Editor for MrBeast (and the channel’s first female Lead Video Editor!). We talked about editing for short-form vs. long-form, how to speed up the editing process, and finding the right editor for you.

Rachel’s Background

Rachel graduated with a Master’s in Documentary Journalism from USC. She’s worked as a tech journalist and documentary editor before starting her career as a freelance video editor for top creators like MrBeast, Hopescope, and Bunny Hedaya. Her videos have gotten over 2 billion views on YouTube.

A Taste of What We Learned

Here are some of our favorite takeaways from Rachel’s Creator Studio.

Long-form vs. short-form editing

  • Long-form: The first few seconds of your video need to be an extension of your title and thumbnail – because people expect immediate payoff.

  • Short-form: Chop off your ending. You want viewers to loop your video – and nothing makes people rewatch more than making them go, “wait, what?”

Find the right editor for you

  • Do they watch your content? It’s common sense, but the best editor for you is someone who already enjoys watching your content and understands what you’re doing.

How to work with an editor

  • Title and thumbnail first. Those two things are integral to shaping a video’s story and content – so make sure you give your editor those first.

How to Download Your TikTok Content

If you’re wishing you could get all your TikTok content, but don’t want to download each video one by one, follow these steps.

  • Go to the web version of TikTok and log in.

  • Go to settings (under the icon bubble) > Download data.

  • Click “all data” then “TXT.”

  • Click Request Data.

It’ll take a couple days for the file to be ready. Once it is, you’ll get a like to download the file. It’ll be a text file with links you can copy/paste into your browser. When you do, it’ll open mov/mp4 files of each of your videos and you can download them from there.
